Learn to Fish Program

The Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC's Learn to Fish program is now available at the fishing pond located behind the Nechako White Sturgeon Conservation Centre. The goal of the fishing pond is to foster a love for fishing in everyone, from young children to adults.

General access to the trout pond

The fishing pond is open dawn to dusk for the general public and is free to use. Come and fish for rainbow trout! Regular fishing regulations apply, and anglers 16 years and older require a basic fishing licence. The pond is strictly catch-and-release only. Bring your own fishing gear (barbless hooks MANDITORY), or borrow a fishing rod and tackle for free.

Register for the Learn to Fish Program

The Learn to Fish Program is a family-friendly session that is currently free to the general public. The Program consists of instruction on everything from how to set up your fishing rod all the way to fish identification and the importance of being able to identify fish correctly. We end every program with about an hour of fishing the trout pond here on-site. This program is for children ages 5 to 15, and parent participation is required.

Check the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC's website to register for the program! Visit the Programs page, and select Omineca from the drop-down Region menu to see upcoming programs.

These sessions are possible thanks to the generous support of our sponsor, TC Energy Corporation.

How to Get to the Trout Pond

The pond is directly behind the sturgeon hatchery in Vanderhoof. There is signage out front that provide easy directions to the pond. We encourage people to park over at Riverside Park and walk across the road at the crosswalk, as there is limited parking at the hatchery.
